About Presbyterians Today

Mission Statement | Meet the Staff

Presbyterians Today is the award-winning, general-interest magazine of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Published 10 times a year, it explores practical issues of faith and life, tells stories of Presbyterians who are living their faith and covers a wide range of church news and activities. Presbyterians Today features easy-to-understand articles about what Presbyterians believe, Bible study and devotional helps, and provocative commentary on the church’s role in society.

Presbyterians Today continues the mission of denominational magazines dating back to the late 1800s. Among these are its immediate predecessors: Presbyterian Survey, Presbyterian Life and A.D.

Statement of purpose

Presbyterians Today seeks to:

  • Report in a fair, accurate and balanced way on the activities of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and of its members, leaders and mission partners.
  • Uphold the mission of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
  • Illuminate the faith and heritage that bind Presbyterians together.
  • Express the rich diversity within the denomination.
  • Challenge readers to grow in their commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord.
  • Provide a Christian perspective on contemporary issues.
  • Be a source of inspiration, spiritual direction and practical tools for life and ministry.
  • Reflect the denomination’s priorities: evangelism, justice, spiritual formation and leadership development.

Patrick is an ordained teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The great grandson of a minister and the son of two public school teachers, Patrick grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was ordained as a ruling elder while still a teenager. He earned degrees in English and Classics while attending Ohio University. Just a week after graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary in May 2011 with a Master of Divinity, he began work with the Presbyterian Mission Agency as associate for social witness and managing editor of Unbound, an online interactive journal of Christian social justice. Patrick is an Eagle Scout, has served as a prison and hospital chaplain, is formally trained in faith-based community organizing, and was formerly staff for the Ford Foundation's Difficult Dialogues Initiative at Ohio University, where he helped facilitate constructive discussion of religion, race, and gender.

Born just up the road in Lexington, Derek is near where he started, but in between he has lived in two countries, five states, and more than a dozen cities, his wife of 16 years a cherished companion for much of the journey, which has included graduate degrees in theology and the history of Christianity. Raised Methodist, he has also worked for a year in Northern Ireland through the Mennonite Mission Network and is pleased that his concern for clear thought and careful expression is now being put to use serving the communication arm of the Presbyterian Mission Agency.
