DWELL/YAV Miami
The most Multi-cultural site in the YAV community, Miami's Dwellers serve, learn and work for mutual mission amidst intense diversity of positions, faith communities, people, and neighborhoods in the capitol of the Caribbean and South America.
This site seeks young adults to engage in the adventure of service and learning with the people of Miami, to engage in intentional Christian community and personal discipleship, to work with local ministries and agencies and to explore urban, multicultural ministry as a vocation and calling.
Placement Opportunities
Miami offers an incredible range of partner agencies and potential work placement. All sites involve multi-cultural settings, clients, and/or supervisors. Sites include service in the areas of:
- Education
- Children/youth
- Gun violence intervention
- Interfaith social justice
- Social work
- Business within non-profits
- Congregational ministry
- Immigrant and refugee services
- Health - public and clinical
- Community organizing
- Homeless services
Volunteers will serve their work placements approximately 32-35 hours a week (four days.) Sunday is set aside for church attendance. YAVs select the church they will attend and involvement is seen as a part of the year of service. One day is a personal day of rest and one day is set aside for YAV/Dwell team to be together in joint service projects, book discussions, skill building and/or community engagement.
Housing
Volunteers live together in any of the neighborhoods around the Downtown Miami area. In past years YAVs have lived in places like Little Havana, Little Haiti, Wynwood and also Homestead, about an hour from Miami.
The community of volunteers will create their own covenant, which will govern such things as house rules and spiritual accountability as well as setting goals and aims of their year together. Community covenants are considered living documents and are reviewed regularly. In addition to serving in a social service agency, the volunteers will be part of a local church and active community members in their neighborhood.
Intentional Community Aspects
Volunteers will spend one day per week with their house community in book discussions, service projects or issue education. In addition, they will participate in a weekly evening community meal and other various activities, worship together once a week and attend retreats. One day a week is set aside for a personal day. Some work sites prefer or require Spanish, Haitian Creole or French, but it is not required to participate in the Miami program. All volunteers are asked to raise financial support and write reflections.
