Table Prayers
These “Table Prayers" are offered as models for simple, one-sentence prayer that one might use when receiving the bread and cup of the Lord's Supper. Each is based on an image or story from Scripture and speaks to some facet of human experience. You might consider using similar prayers in personal devotion at ordinary meals, especially when eating alone. You might also introduce this form of prayer to a Bible study or Sunday school class or lead a small group in writing their own table prayers.
Blessed are you, O God, for this bread from heaven, the gift of your grace. (Exodus 17)
Thank you, Lord, for preparing a table for me; my cup overflows. (Psalm 23)
What a blessing to taste and see your goodness, O Lord! (Psalm 34)
You satisfy my soul, O God, with a rich feast. (Psalm 63)
Teach me to hunger and thirst for your righteousness, O God. (Matthew 5)
Lord, you lift up the lowly and fill the hungry with good things. (Luke 1)
Open my eyes, O Lord, to know you in the breaking of this bread. (Luke 24)
For Jesus Christ, bread of life, I give you thanks, O God. (John 6)
