Was crucified, dead, and buried
Heidelberg Catechism
Heidelberg Catechism Question 39. Is there something more in his having been crucified than if he had died some other death? Yes, for by this I am assured that he took upon himself the curse which lay upon me, because the death of the cross was cursed by God.
Heidelberg Catechism Question 40. Why did Christ have to suffer “death”? Because the righteousness and truth of God are such that nothing else could make reparation for our sins except the death of the Son of God.
Heidelberg Catechism Question 41. Why was he “buried”? To confirm the fact that he was really dead.
Heidelberg Catechism Question 42. Since, then, Christ died for us, why must we also die? Our death is not a reparation for our sins, but only a dying to sin and an entering into eternal life.
Heidelberg Catechism Question 43. What further benefit do we receive from the sacrifice and death of Christ on the cross? That by his power our old self is crucified, put to death, and buried with him, so that the evil passions of our mortal bodies may reign in us no more, but that we may offer ourselves to him as a sacrifice of thanksgiving.
Study Catechism
Study Catechism Question 43. What do you affirm when you say that he was “crucified, dead and buried”? That when our Lord passed through the door of real human death, he showed us that there is no sorrow he has not known, no grief he has not borne, and no price he was unwilling to pay in order to reconcile us to God.
- Matt. 26:38-39 “Then he said to them, ‘I am deeply grieved, even to death; remain here, and stay awake with me.’ And going a little farther, he threw himself on the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.’”
- Is. 53:5 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed.”
- Gal. 3:13 “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.’”
- Heb. 2:9 “But we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.”
- 2 Cor. 5:19 “That is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us.”
