Taking cues from Calvin

Submitted by Stephen Williams, First Presbyterian Church, Savannah, Georgia

First Presbyterian Church of Savannah picked up on the idea of communion every Sunday during Lent.

We added a 9 a.m. prayer service that has included Scripture reading, prayer led by an elder and communion by intinction. Also taking a cue from Calvin, after the Assurance of Pardon, we added the Summary of the Law. The service has been well attended. Then folks go to Sunday school and worship. So it has not been an alternative service so much as deepening worship experience during the season.

We had a Sunday luncheon and program by a college professor earlier this year on Calvin. Most times, the weekly newsletter this entire year carries a quotation from Calvin.
