110 small producers are using the processing plants for their rice and beans. They are struggling a bit this season because the price of rice has dropped from $2,100 pesos per sack last year, to only about $1,800 pesos this year. But they say that even with this drop in price, that they are still much better off economically now that they don’t have to work through middlemen and are able to process their grains on their own.

“When we worked with the middlemen, we worked hard and were left with next to nothing. Our families live differently now too. I wish we could show you how poor our living conditions were and how different they are today. We have rebuilt our houses and have been able to send our children to the university. Money isn’t everything, but you can’t do much without it.”
