Laos
Background
Laos is one of the few remaining Communist states in the world. The Christian church is small but alive and growing. Having few trained pastors, the church has identified leadership training as its first priority. Leadership development is done in cooperation with the Evangelical Church of Laos and National Association Protestant Church. Intense combat from 1964 to 1973 left Laos littered with many unexploded ordnance (UXO). Several million tons of ordnance were dropped on Laos during this period, of which 30 percent remains unexploded. The United
States government has had an active role in UXO removal programs in Laos since 1996 and has also been its single largest donor. These programs offer courses in community awareness, clearance techniques, medical training and leadership development.
The PC(USA) works in Laos through cooperation with its church partners.
