Pray for peace in Mozambique

Backgound

Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest countries, has suffered from 16 years of civil war, with both internal and external displaced persons (some 1 million refugees). As refugees returned from Malawi, there have been language and assimilation problems — some have felt stronger ties with the Malawi church than the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique (IPM), which is strongest in the country’s southern districts.

The PC(USA) is involved in Mozambique through cooperation with its partner church, the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique (IPM). The PC(USA)’s Outreach Foundation assists the holistic evangelism ministry of a Malawian missionary in the Tete region. This initiative has established scores of congregations and prayer houses, as well building classrooms and training a cadre of traditional birth attendants and community health advisors. Through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance the PC(USA) has also given aid in times of flood and drought.
