Worship service in Pyongyang focuses on peace and reunification of Korean peninsula
A worship service in Pyongyang, North Korea, was jointly prepared by the National Council of Churches in Korea in South Korea and the Korean Christian Federation in North Korea
April 2013 PCK/PC(USA) consultation asks the U.S., South Korea, and North Korea governments to enter immediately into dialogue to ease the current tensions by ending inflammatory rhetoric, confrontational policies, and provocative military exercises; and:
• requests a season of prayer from June 25 to August 15 for three years
• agrees to collaborate on issues of evangelism, poverty, and healing and reconciliation
Background
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has had extensive work in Korea for over a century of ministry and, in spite of the division of the country, has one mission specialist continuing to work in North Korea. Jungja Hong, serving at the invitation of the Korean Christian Federation, is an artist who uses her art to teach and communicate the gospel message to children and youth.
Korea has experienced severe food shortages since the early 1990s. Korean-American congregations of the PC(USA) have provided food aid to North Koreans, as has the PC(USA) through the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. The PC(USA) has supported the Bongsoo Church’s orphanage with donations of grain, medicine and diapers, and because of the shortage of milk cows in North Korea, it supplies soy milk to supplement the diet of babies and children. It has also supplied tons of wheat flour to support production at the Bongsoo noodle factory.
