A Letter from Myoung Ho Yang serving in Hong Kong

November 2014 - Getting Started

The beautiful view of green ridges met our eyes when we arrived here Hong Kong at the end of August. It is still green after two months have passed by and I guess it will be green in January, too. Having been accustomed to the various colors and air of four seasons our whole life, here we cannot tell the change of seasons and time without the aid of calendar.  We have become more and more used to this humid and sweating weather. But a small lizard taking a rest in our dish still takes Ji Yeon by surprise.  Our two boys living in the U.S. by nowmay be well adjusted to living by themselves.

School started a week after we arrived. Most classes are taught in Cantonese and a few in English. We have many students from mainland China, Myanmar, and Cambodia. As I talk with the students, I realize that there is a huge vineyard beyond imagination connected to this vineyard where we are serving. Looking into that vineyard generates passion and hope, which gives us an impetus to language studies.

We started language studies the middle of September. Learning a new language is difficult but at the same time enjoyable. I spend most of my time learning language and preparing a Hymnology class that I am teaching this term. We feel that our growing up in Korea will be beneficial for our ministry here. The influx of Korean pop music and drama has led many people to get interested in Korean culture and learning Korean. They are very friendly and welcome us. We expect this could serve as a good point of contact for our ministry. We met a lady who learned Korean several years ago, who does not know Christ. We could make an opportunity to go to church with her last Sunday.

We are visiting different local churches since we got here to understand more about worship services in Hong Kong and to get immersed deeply in this culture. A couple of weeks ago we got lost while finding the way to a church. There was a problem in a direction posted on a website. While lost in the street we encountered a crowd jammed near a subway station so we could go through easily. They were a group of people who have lost “The Way.” They were workers who came from an Asian nation. They are working as housemaids from Monday to Saturday and have a day off on Sunday. After spending all day long together, they go back to their workplaces. Those who lost “The Way” whom we met while losing our way to a church remain in our hearts and in our prayers.

In your prayers, please remember Hong Kong. Please pray for peace, especially at this time in history. Thank you for your prayers, support, and partnership with us in this ministry. Please continue to walk with us so that we can minister to the students and churches by the power and mercy of our God.

Grace in Christ,
Myoung Ho and Ji Yeon
