“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” — Luke 23:42

Hallowed be thy name

Heidelberg Catechism

Heidelberg Catechism Question 122. What is the first petition? “Hallowed be thy name.” That is: help us first of all to know thee rightly, and to hallow, glorify, and praise thee in all thy works through which there shine thine almighty power, wisdom, goodness, righteousness, mercy, and truth. And so order our whole life in thought, word, and deed that thy name may never be blasphemed on our account, but may always be honored and praised.

Westminster Shorter Catechism

Shorter Catechism Question 101. What do we pray for in the first petition? In the first petition, which is, “Hallowed be thy name,” we pray that God would enable us, and others, to glorify him in all that whereby he maketh himself known, and that he would dispose all things to his own glory.

  • Ps. 67:1-3 “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.”
  • 2 Thess. 3:1 “Finally, brothers and sisters, pray for us, so that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be glorified everywhere, just as it is among you.”
  • Isa. 64:1-2 “O that you would tear open the heavens and come down, so that the mountains would quake at your presence— as when fire kindles brushwood and the fire causes water to boil— to make your name known to your adversaries, so that the nations might tremble at your presence!”
  • Ps. 145:1-2 “I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you, and praise your name forever and ever.”
  • Rom. 11:36 “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen.”

Study Catechism

Study Catechism Question 127. What is meant by the first petition, “Hallowed be your name”? This petition is placed first, because it comprehends the goal and purpose of the whole prayer. The glory of God’s name is the highest concern in all that we pray and do. God’s “name” stands for God’s being as well as for God’s attributes and works. When we pray for this name to be “hallowed,” we ask that we and all others will know and glorify God as God really is, and that all things will be so ordered that they serve God truly for God’s sake.

  • Jer. 9:23-24 “Thus says the Lord: Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom, do not let the mighty boast in their might, do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth; but let those who boast boast in this, that they understand and know me, that I am the Lord; I act with steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord.”
  • Rom. 11:36 “For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen.”
  • Ps. 115:1 “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness.”
