Background

Roughly 80 percent of Zimbabwe’s people identify as Christian. The PC(USA) is involved in Zimbabwe through partnerships with the Presbytery of Zimbabwe of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa and the Harare Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP).

The church in Zimbabwe has a well-educated clergy and laity, but it is struggling to minister to a society experiencing extreme political tension, social disruption and economic collapse. Land seizures and hyperinflation in the first decade of the 21st century contributed to enhanced political conflict. Many people have been displaced, and Zimbabwe has gone from being a net food exporter in the 1990s to a food insecure nation where millions are frequently in urgent need of food assistance. At great personal risk, some church leaders have spoken out against injustices, and they need the solidarity and support of partners in other parts of the world. While changes to monetary policy and the negotiation of a "global political agreement" between the ruling and opposition parties from 2009 to 2013 dampened political conflict and improved economic stability, many of the underlying issues remain unresolved.
