St John’s Vocational and Technical Training Center
By Kathleen Julian
The St John’s Vocational and Technical Training Center was established in 1991 in a large facility that was previously a leper compound. The grounds and classrooms were meticulously clean and we were welcomed into the vibrantly painted office for refreshment of cola and chips—no tea here! The classrooms were orderly with students intent on learning. It was interesting to watch eyebrow threading and henna painting. Then in a physics class, we observed electrical circuits tested and cell phones repaired. We admired the precise examples of tailoring and pattern drafting and the talented drawing in the animation class. The auto mechanic class (two-year program) had 64 students ranging in age from 14 to 31 years. The computer class maintained a waiting list and had a ratio of 70 percent men to 30 percent women.
Seeing what work was being done here and the care that was given was a very uplifting and positive experience. They shared with us their concern for the renewal of the lease on this property as the owner wants to double the rent.
Kathleen traveled to India in October 2011 with Presbyterian Women’s Global Exchange.
