About Sara Baltodano's ministry
Sara Baltodano, along with her husband, Rev. Guido Mahecha (now retired), has been under appointment as a PC(USA) mission co-worker since 1990. She now serves with the Universidad Bíblica Latinoamericano (UBL) in San José, Costa Rica, where she is a professor in practical theology and Guido has been a professor of New Testament.

Country context
Costa Rica borders the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. It has one of the highest life expectancies in Central America. Tourism and commerce are Costa Rica’s main industries, accounting for 68 percent of its GDP. It has a growing technology/computer chip industry, and its main agricultural products include bananas, coffee, sugar and beef. Although it is one of the most prosperous nations in Central America, 15–20 percent of the population live at or below poverty levels. About three-quarters of the population are Roman Catholic and approximately 15 percent are Protestant.

About Sara Baltodano
Prior to their appointment to the UBL in 1999, the Mahechas had served as PC(USA) mission co-workers at the Universidad Unión Evangélica Boliviana in La Paz, Bolivia (1990 to 1994), and at the Seminario Teológico de Fortaleza in Fortaleza, Brazil (1995 to 1999).

Sara, a native of Costa Rica, earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the Universidad de Costa Rica in San José and a master's degree in pastoral counseling from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Prior to her work in Bolivia, she was a professor and counselor at the Seminario Teologico Presbiteriana in Bogota, Colombia, and was a high school counselor and teacher at Colegio Americano in Girardot, Colombia. Sara is ordained to the office of elder.

Sara is accompanied by her husband, Guido Mahecha. A native of Colombia, Guido  served as a teacher, director and principal of Presbyterian educational institutions in Colombia and as pastor of Iglesia Presbiteriana in Girardot. He is an alumnus of the UBL, which was formerly the Latin American Biblical Seminary. Ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament  by the Presbiterio del Sur of the Presbyterian Church of Colombia, he has served as presbytery moderator, general secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Colombia and Secretary of AIPRAL (Association of Presbyterian and Reformed Churches in Latin America).

The Mahechas have three adult children: a daughter, Saguid, and two sons, Ebed and Caleb, who all live in Costa Rica.
