About Judy Chan's ministry
Rev. Judy Chan has been under appointment by the PC(USA) since 1994, several years before the “handover” of 1997, when Hong Kong's sovereignty changed from being a British colony to becoming a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China.
Judy is seconded to the Hong Kong Christian Council, where she is Executive Secretary for Communications. Her responsibilities include an ecumenical radio broadcasting ministry, English publications, and liaising with international churches. Her ministry is a joint appointment of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Disciples of Christ, and the United Church of Christ Common Global Ministries Board.
Judy is a member of the World Association for Christian Communication and served as Vice Chairperson (2005-2008) and Treasurer (2008-2014) of the Asia region.
Since the 1997 handover many people have asked Judy if anything has changed in Hong Kong. She says: “So much has happened since then—the Asian economic crisis, SARS, demonstrations against proposed subversion laws, the ongoing struggle for constitutional reform, and of course the ‘Occupy/Umbrella Movement’ for democratic elections that made worldwide news in late 2014. All these are challenges to the church in Hong Kong to put their faith into action while maintaining Christian unity to bring hope and love to the city.”
While Hong Kong people are proud to be reunited with the motherland, they are also passionate to preserve Hong Kong’s unique heritage and status as one of the leading global cities in China. Please pray that the people of Hong Kong will remain united and able to resolve tensions with their compatriots and the government on the mainland for the best realization of the 1997 “one country, two systems” policy. May God continue to guide the Christian community in the call to bring God’s justice, peace and reconciliation to bless Hong Kong and the nation.
About Judy Chan
Judy was born and reared in Mississippi. She received her Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Baylor University, Waco, Texas; Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut; Master of Journalism from Hong Kong University; and Doctor of Theology from Chung Chi Divinity School, Hong Kong. She has worked in homeland ministries at the Metropolitan New York Baptist Association in New York City, was a chaplain intern at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C., was an English teacher at Kwun Tong Vocational Training Centre in Hong Kong, and associate pastor of the Chinese Community Church in Washington, D.C. Judy is a clergy member of National Capital Presbytery. She and her husband, Joe, have four children, Fiona, Grace, Amy and Joel.
