A letter from Darlene and Paul Heller in Malawi

October 7, 2009

While we were gone

Dear Friends,

Photo of the face of a small baby wrapped in blankets and a head scarf.

One of the children most recently taken in by the Ministry of Hope.

“Who is minding the store while you are here in the States?” That question came up at almost every one of the eight presentations about the nursery we gave in September.

The answer is simple: Our competent Malawian staff. Augustine Harawa (administrative assistant), Anna Kamanga (nurse) and Veronica Mwenelupembe (staff supervisor) took full responsibility for all administrative decisions. Our 12 nannies, two housekeepers, two watchmen and our gardener carried on faithfully.

Upon our return we were welcomed with songs and hugs. We were also welcomed by 15 healthy babies, including three new arrivals: Brandina, Eunice and Gift. Alec, however, who has filled our life with the joy of his smile, his play and his hugs since our arrival last August, has gone back to his home in the village. That is the joy of why the nursery exists, but still it hurts.

Visiting our own “home village” in the States was a joy, but so is the return to our village here in Mzuzu.

There is always something new at our blog, Suffer the Little Children, so please visit us and let us know you stopped by by leaving us a comment. Thanks.

Paul and Darlene
