The worst flooding in Taiwan in 50 years
Last weekend, Typhoon Morakot, which means “emerald,” hit Taiwan, dumping as much as 80 inches of rain in some places and inflicting the worst flooding the island has seen in at least half a century. Taiwanese officials put the confirmed death toll from the Morakot at 62, with 57 people missing. But these number don’t include residents of the village of Shiao Lin in southern Taiwan, where several hundred remained unaccounted for after a mudslide last Sunday. The mudslide covered a large part of the village including a primary school and many homes. One of the villagers who was rescued told police that a part of the mountain above them just fell on the village, and his family of 10 were wiped out. Please pray for those who lost their loved ones and are recovering from the typhoon.
For our mission center (Hualien Aboriginal Campus Ministry) in Hualien, in eastern Taiwan, is all right. We called our co-worker, Alang, and he reported that the center had little damage due to the trees around it. He sent several pictures of the damage, and we found peace after seeing them. We asked him to check our students’ situation. He reported back to us that they were all right as well. We thank God for their safety and protection.
Now we are doing interpretation assignment in the States. We first went to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, to participate in the New Wilmington Mission Conference. It was a seven-day mission conference attended by about 1,000 people—high school students, college students, and adults. Its purpose is to deepen the missionary spirit with a view toward the fulfillment of our Lord’s Great Commission. Every day we shared our mission work with a small group, and once we had the opportunity to present our work to a large group. We also has a display in the display area. There we met a former missionary to Taiwan and two possible new supporting churches. They told us they thought we were doing great mission work in Taiwan and wanted to support us. After the conference, we visited two churches on our way home.
