A letter from Chris McReynolds on the U.S.–Mexico border

March 23, 2009

Amistad prayer update

“The work of God for you,” replied Jesus “is to believe in the one whom he has sent to you.” (John 6:29)

Please join Proyecto Amistad and the churches of Noreste Presbytery of Mexico in praying for the following:

  • We give thanks to God for the life and service of Juanita Herrera, formerly of Sinai Presbyterian Church in Monclova, Coahuila, who has passed away. Juanita was active for years in Noreste Presbytery and the Union Nacional de Sociedades Femeniles (National Presbyterian Women’s Society) as well as a member of the board of directors of Laredos Unidos and, for a short time, a member of the board of Proyecto Amistad.
  • Pray for Mexico, its people, leaders and especially for the Church, that God would give strength, wisdom and the faith to be God’s answer to the many challenges that the nation faces — the economy, the drug cartel activity and the schools. Pray for God’s provision and guidance for Proyecto Amistad’s ministry on how to respond to the reduction in U.S.-Mexico church partnership work due to the publicity on drug violence and the economy.
  • Join in praying for Capopan Flores de Jesus of El Buen Pastor in Castanos, Coahuila, who is recovering from hip replacement surgery. Capopan and her husband Sylvestre have devoted many years of their lives to the work of the church, and we give thanks to God for the work accomplished through them.
  • We are thankful for the after-school vacation Bible school carried out at El Buen Pastor Presbyterian Church of Castanos, Coahuila, supported by Covenant Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, Texas. We also give thanks for El Buen Pastor’s new program that reaches out to kids in one of the bad neighborhoods. The work has gone very well, and the kids have responded enthusiastically to the teaching, fellowship and activities.
  • Pray for the start up of a Kids Club here in Nuevo Laredo by Amistad and local churches. The focus will be take the “life and peace” of Jesus Christ to kids who might otherwise fall victim to the many deadly influences that surround them.
  • Photo of a woman working with three children in a room.

“Bible Encounter” activity hosted by Victoria en Jesucristo in Nuevo Laredo.

  • We give thanks for the “Bible Encounter” activity hosted by Victoria en Jesucristo here in Nuevo Laredo. Participants enjoyed fellowship and improved their Bible knowledge through games involving scripture memorization and questions and answers.
  • Pray for Proyecto Amistad’s board of directors meeting this Saturday March 28. Pray for God’s guidance for the board — that He would provide U.S. board members for the two vacancies that exist. The board is made up of four members from Noreste Presbytery of Mexico and four PC(USA) members of Mission Presbytery.

Respondió Jesús y les dijo: Esta es la obra de Dios, que creás en el que él ha enviado.” (Juan 6.29)
