A letter from Mark Wright on home assignment from Honduras

August 2012

“Hermano Marcos!” Pastora Tomasa greeted me as soon as I entered our monthly gathering, “Come over and let me show this to you.”  She took some ragged pages from an envelope and proudly held them out for me to see.  “These are the names of the brothers and sisters for the new congregation in Buenos Aires!”

Meeting with Pastora Tomasa and Don Jose in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is about an hour’s walk (or so they say; it seems further than that to me) from Pastora Tomasa’s little congregation in the mountains of Comayagua.  It’s an exciting area, difficult to reach, but beautiful, and filled with people hungry for the gospel of Jesus.  Tomasa’s congregation at Las Botijas stands on the edge of the area, with the young church of El Sute further in the isolated, deep green mountains.

The El Sute congregation has been very enthusiastic and has grown rapidly, drawing people from many miles in the surrounding mountains.  Baptisms and weddings have been plentiful as people come to adopt a new way of life in Jesus Christ.  Already in El Horno, a few kilometers from El Sute, land has been donated and ground has been broken for a new congregation.  Even before the first blocks have been laid, the elders are talking about how they can reach into other surrounding mountain communities.

As well, for months now some of the brothers and sisters from Las Botijas have been meeting with residents of Buenos Aires.  Now Don Jose, a sort of patriarch of the area, has offered to donate some beautiful land next to the schoolhouse to build a new church.

Pastors and elders at the at the new El Horno church site.

A couple of weeks after Tomasa brought the names, Pastor Juan Rodas and I traveled to Las Botijas to do vision exams and give glasses to people in the area.  We made sure to end our work in time to visit Don Jose and his family and see this land in Buenos Aires.  The people are excited—and so am I—about the growth of the church and hunger for the gospel in this beautiful and remote area.

If you have ever wondered how you can be a part of what is happening in the Presbyterian Church of Honduras, prayers and support for these two new churches in El Horno and Buenos Aires are just two of the opportunities to share and participate.  You can also check www.honduraspresbytery.com to find out more about what’s happening in Honduras.

I want to take this opportunity as well to share that we are currently back in the United States on “itineration assignment,” after have completed our first three-year term with the church in Honduras.  We will be centered in Memphis through the end of this year.  Ethan, Eliott, and Gabriel will all be attending a semester of school in the U.S., and I will be available to visit churches and presbyteries to talk about Presbyterian World Mission and the work we are involved in with the Presbyterian Church of Honduras.  I would love to have an invitation to visit you!  Please email or call so we can make that happen. Blessings!
