The Presbytery of Northern Kansas

For many years windmills have been a familiar part of the landscape of Kansas. Settlers depended on them to bring water up from the ground. Now they are being used to generate electricity. While they appreciate the good that wind can do and have a clear understanding of how much they need water, Kansans also know that both can be destructive. Tornadoes are all too frequent in this part of the country, and they’ve also experienced flooding over the years, most recently in 2007 and 2008.
Perhaps because they know the damage that wind and water can cause, Presbyterians in Northern Kansas have a strong sense of compassion for those who have had their lives turned upside down by natural disasters. They have gone to help out after a tornado destroyed most of Greensburg, Kansas. They’ve sent work teams to West Virginia, Iowa, Texas, and the Gulf Coast to assist communities that have been flooded or that have been hit by hurricanes. They remain committed to working with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and plan to be a part of the long-term strategic plan for hurricane response.
Lives have been touched as volunteers from Northern Kansas have cleared debris, replaced siding, put up drywall, and repainted homes. Hearts have been touched as stories are shared when the volunteers return home. The Holy Spirit has been at work in the aftermath of all these disasters. That’s the wind that makes the difference, the living water that believers still need.
The Presbytery of Northern Kansas is composed of 68 congregations and 9,089 members.
