A letter from Marta Carriker in Brazil

March 2012

And then I heard the voice of the Master:

“Whom shall I send?

Who will go for us?”

I spoke up, “I’ll go. Send me!”  (Isaiah 6:8, The Message)

Dear friends and family,

Last Sunday our church held one of its first missions services.  This church had already demonstrated missionary vision by opening its doors to house the Missionary Training Center (MTC), where we taught from 1998 to 2006.  When the denomination changed gears and decided to close it this church continued their support of two local ministries: The Evangelical Association for Social Action, which works with underprivileged children and teens through an after-school program, and the Shiloh Project, which ministers to substance abusers and their families and HIV patients.

Not satisfied with this local involvement alone, we began to pray for the church worldwide as part of our weekly services.  It did not take long for us to adopt two international projects in partnership with mission agencies.  Maria Helena, who was trained at our own MTC, is in Mexico with Youth With a Mission (YWAM), working with children, youth and their families as well as reaching out to a native community. Carla, Marcelo and their family are in Africa evangelizing in a difficult non-Christian environment.

We are pleased to report that last Sunday our church of about 200 members pledged to give more than $1,000 monthly to continue to support these ministries.  God has been at work here and we no longer feel limited by our geographical location or by the crisis in world economy.

We ask you to pray that we will be faithful to our commitment and that God will continue to use the Independent Presbyterian Church of Estreito and these precious missionaries we support to reach out and bless those He has sent us to.

Thank you for supporting us here.  Tim is one of the pastors of this church and I am a member of the missions committee.  Soon we will be leaving for an interpretation assignment in the United States (previously known as furlough). We will be living in Charlotte from April until September and hope to see you sometime soon.  We are looking forward to that opportunity to share with you in person.  If you would like to schedule a visit you can contact us writing to tim.carriker@gmail.com or to tim.carriker@pcusa.org .

Blessings on all of your missionary involvement,

Tim and Marta Carriker
