John and Paula Ewers
John and Paula ended their term of service as PC(USA) mission co-workers on June 30, 2008.
John and Paula Ewers were appointed in July 2005 to serve in Colombia in the newly created role of pastoral accompaniers for human rights workers and displaced people. The need for this kind of ministry has arisen over the last few years as paramilitary groups have targeted for assassination human rights workers and church workers serving displaced people.
In this endeavor, the PC(USA) is working with the Presbyterian Church of Colombia (IPC), which has stood with the poor and oppressed against all forms of violence. The IPC, a historical partner of the PC(USA), celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2006.
The Ewers work closely with the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship (PPF), which recruits and trains short-term accompaniers and raises funds for the program. Anyone interested in the short-term accompaniment program should visit PPF’s website.
For the last seven years John has been very active in Miami Presbytery’s partnership with the Presbytery of the North Coast of Colombia (of the Presbyterian Church of Colombia). When in September 2004 the General Assembly Council of the PC(USA) approved a plan for PC(USA) members to accompany church leaders and human rights workers in Colombia, John Ewers was one of the first to apply.
John holds a Bachelor of Science in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was employed by Burroughs Corporation from 1957 to 1982 and by NCR Corporation from 1983 to 1991, when he retired.
Prior to her appointment, Paula was employed as a bookkeeper and computer operator for Second Street Public Market in Dayton, Ohio.
John and Paula are members of College Hill Community Church in Dayton, Ohio. Paula is ordained as a deacon and has served since 1994 as church treasurer. John is ordained to both the office of deacon and elder and served as Clerk of Session for many years.
