A letter from Ken and Carline White in Haiti

July 2011

Aftermath from the 2010 earthquake in Haiti

Aftermath from the 2010 earthquake in Haiti

After viewing the devastation and suffering wrought by the earthquake in Haiti, we answered the call of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to participate in God's mission of reconciliation, healing, liberation, and salvation in that country. Philippians 2:3b-4 says: "Be humble, thinking of others as better than you. Don't think only about your own affairs and needs, but be interested in others, too, and what they are doing." This Scripture written under the guidance of God's Holy Spirit.

We were commissioned at the Big Tent gathering in Indianapolis, Indiana, on July 2, 2011, by Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) World Mission as mission co-workers to serve as facilitators of the Presbyterian response to Haiti. In this capacity, we will work with partner organizations to host mission groups from presbyteries and individual congregations, assisting various short-term mission work groups with logistics and helping them process their experiences in Haiti. The four areas of service in which groups may serve alongside Haitian partners include building permanent housing, community health/mental health (medical mission), food security (agriculture), and rebuilding schools in Leogane. Also, part of this involvement includes extending invitations to our partners to address the three critical global issues of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.): (1) root causes of poverty and their impact on women and children; (2) evangelization; and (3) peace-building and reconciliation.

Prior to working with our partners, our first six months will include learning the language and cultures of Haiti. The first three months will involve living in the mountains in the town of Hinche. Then we will look for permanent residence in Leogane, where we will continue learning the language and culture with the assistance of a tutor. Thus we will be listening, observing, and learning from our Haitian partner organizations and people. There is much to learn from our valued partners as we participate with them in God's mission in their country. Please pray for us as we prepare to meet new challenges, make new friendships, and face new opportunities for learning and service.

We ask for your prayers and invite you to become partners with us in God's ministry in Haiti. You can contribute to our sending and support through account number E200486. Churches can send support through this account: D507552.

Peace and Mercy,
