About Ken and Carline White’s Ministry
Numerous mission teams are traveling to Haiti in response to the earthquake that devastated much of the country in 2010. As part of the ongoing Presbyterian response to the disaster, Kenneth White and Carline St. Victor-White will help the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) identify partner organizations and match those partners with mission teams from the United States. Based in Leogane, they will assist the teams by coordinating logistics, arranging seminars on the context of Haiti, and providing other types of support to enable the teams’ effectiveness.
About Ken and Carline White
Ken White and Carline White go to Haiti believing that the church can play a major role helping the country rebuild from the devastating effects of the 2010 earthquake.
“Our hope for the church is multi-faceted,” Ken says. A faithful church, he explains, invites people to faith in Jesus Christ and works with others to develop a more just society. Joining with Haitian partners and U.S. Presbyterians, Ken and Carline say their goal is not just to meet immediate needs, but to assist the Haitians and PC(USA) volunteers as together they build capacity to provide ongoing services.
“We hope to help mission teams rebuild schools, facilitate the construction of permanent housing, and provide services that promote physical and mental health,” says Carline.
Like people around the world, Ken and Carline sat in front of their television and watched in horror as scenes of the earthquake’s destruction were broadcast from Haiti, a country that had not recovered from earlier disasters. “The living conditions of many Haitians touched our hearts and minds,” Carline says.
Ken and Carline have also been touched by a sense that God has called them to mission service. “Our sense of call to mission is guided by our faith and salvation freely given in Jesus Christ,” Ken says. “One of our guiding Scriptures is Luke 4:16–19, in which we are called by Jesus to imitate his ministry to teach, heal, and preach the good news of salvation and to work with others as we strive to be faithful to our Lord Jesus.”
Ken, a member of the Tropical Florida Presbytery, has served as a clinical therapist, a substance-abuse counselor, and a social work professor. Most recently he taught at Grambling State University in Louisiana. He holds an undergraduate degree from Bowie State University in Maryland, and master's and doctoral degrees in social work from Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. His theological degree is from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.
Carline has more than two decades of public service experience, working for state governments in New York and Florida as well as the Broward County Board of Education in Florida. Her most recent job was teaching high school reading for Florida’s St. Lucie County Board of Education. She holds an associate’s degree from Broward Community College and a bachelor’s in education from Florida Atlantic University. She is fluent in four languages, English, Spanish, French, and Creole. The latter two languages are the official languages of Haiti.
