Mission Matters: Young Adult Volunteers

New YAV Sites Opening

As we look at the life of the church, it is clear that we must be open to how the Spirit is moving in the lives of our young adults. Those youth are not simply the future of the church, but they are helping to grow and sustain it as the teachings of Jesus Christ become visible in their lives. This is why Presbyterian World Mission places a strong emphasis on the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) Program.

The YAV program seeks to fully connect young adults, ages 19 to 30 years old, to their faith by giving them opportunities for discernment and growth. Volunteers are placed in jobs with community agencies or local churches depending on the needs of partners and the skills of the volunteer. YAV’s learn the value of serving others around the world – growing spiritually and developing their leadership skills within the church.

The work of YAV’s focuses around the three Critical Global Issues identified by Presbyterian World Mission: poverty alleviation, reconciliation, and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

They engage in this work while living and reflecting with other volunteers on the meaning and motivation of their Christian faith.

It is truly a year of service that leads to a lifetime of change. And, now we are hoping to reach even more young adults within the Presbyterian Church (USA). We are excited to announce the opening of six new YAV sites for 2014/2015 – three of which are national and three are international.  Do you know a young adult who is called to service?  Invite them to take deeper look at the YAV program today.

Deadlines are fast approaching to take part in a year of international and national service. Valentine’s Day, February 14, is the deadline for international service, and May 15 is the deadline to apply for national service.

Please pray for the more than 70 YAV’s currently in service. They are serving, learning, and growing at 16 sites around the world. Many of them are now discerning their life and can use the support we each can offer them.
