Helen Chao
(Denver YAV 15-16)
Hello! My name is Helen Chao. I was born in Macau, China, but my family and I moved to Apple Valley, Minnesota when I was seven. I grew up in the valley of apples with my parents and younger brother, Johnny. I am a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Psychology and a certificate in Asian American Studies. I am very interested in mental health and well-being and I would like to become a counseling psychologist. During my collegiate years, I was a member of the Mountaineering Club, Sigma Alpha Omega, a Christian sorority, Psi Chi, an honor society for psychology, and Pres House, a campus ministry. I also worked in two social psychology research labs focused on inter-group relations and prejudice, and culture and cognition. A few of my interests include: running, rock climbing, doing yoga, traveling, cooking, and baking. I think YAV will be an amazing opportunity for me to further my faith, explore my passions, and serve others, all while living simply and intentionally. I am very excited about my year in Denver and all of the new experiences that it will bring. I am incredibly thankful for my family, friends, and the community at Pres House for all of their love and support!
