Jocelyn Kirk
(New Orleans YAV 15-16)
Hi there! My name is Jocelyn Kirk, and I am a native of Louisville, KY. While I love Kentucky, I moved to Michigan for undergrad at Alma College in Alma, MI. While at Alma, I majored in Secondary Education and English with a minor in Math. I spent over a hundred hours in the classroom before becoming a Student Teacher in the fall of my senior year. It was my enjoyment of education and my devotion to my congregation and faith that led me to choose the YAV program as my next chapter in life. After a discernment period, I chose New Orleans as my YAV site because I believe it will let me further explore two of my passions, education and service.
In April 2015 I graduated from Alma and moved back to Kentucky. My crazy and lovable parents have actively helped me facilitate my dreams and are both looking forward to using me as an excuse to visit one of their favorite cities. My older brother—a YAV alum—is also thinking of going into an educational field and will be moving to Europe to follow that ideal. Finally, my adorable and overly active puppy, Callie, will spend her time missing me by chewing on my shoes.
I am extremely excited for the next journey to begin and look forward to sharing my experiences with my wonderfully supportive church—Highland Presbyterian Church—and with my supporters through this experience. I hope New Orleans will lead me into a bright future!
The Young Adult Volunteer program is a year-long service program for young adults between ages 19 and 30. Read more about the YAV program here
