Coordinating Committee for Korean American Presbyteries (CCKAP)

Background

The 209th General Assembly (1997) approved the formation of the Coordinating Committee for Korean American Presbyteries (CCKAP) for the purpose of conducting conference and networking for its programs and activities, and approved funding for the conference and networking (Minutes p.62, 1997). The Associate for Korean emerging Ministries has been assigned to staff the CCKAP as Coordinator.

As of December 31, 2012, there are four Non-geographic Korean American language Presbyteries in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A)

  • Hamin Presbytery in the Synod of Southern California & Hawaii (1984)
  • Midwest Hanmi Presbytery in the Synod of the Lincoln Trails (1994)
  • Eastern Hanmi Presbytery in the Synod of the Northeast (1996)
  • Atlantic Korean American Presbytery in the Synod of Mid-Atlantic (1997)

The CCKAP has served to energize and enhance the ministry of Korean American Presbyteries with commitment and enthusiasm for the unique ministry to which they have been called within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A).

Goals and Objectives

In order to effectively accomplish its mission CCKAP established new strategic goals for 2013-2016 as follows:

1.  The CCKAP coordinates programs and activities to sustain the Transformational Leadership Development.

2.  The CCKAP commits to assist and support the Korean American Presbyteries to develop 16 New Worshiping Communities.

3.  The CCCKAP advocates ministries for Compassionate and Prophetic Discipleship.

4.  The CCKAP coordinates programs and activities in Young Adults Ministries.

5.  The CCKAP works with OGA and PMA to develop strategies for effective and contextualized ministries for Korean American Presbyteries in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A).

 Ministries

The annual conference of the CCAKP was held on March 19-21, 2012 at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville. Moderators, Executive Presbyters, States Clerks, COM/CPM Chairs, Women representatives, and English Ministry representatives from the four Korean American Presbyteries participated in the conference to share their ministries, issues and concerns that are unique in the context of Korean American Presbyteries. There were special orders for greeting and presentations with offices of the PMA Executive Director, OGA States Clerk, and Director’s office of the Racial Ethnic & Women’s Ministries/PW. There were also informative sessions with leaders from the Department of Constitutional Services, the Office of Vocation, and the Office of Mid-Council Relations.

The annual conference of the CCKAP is a significant opportunity to strengthen the connectional nature of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) and it is a productive and fruitful gathering for Korean American Presbyteries to share their successes, failures, and common vision and strategies for the future direction.

The Executive Committee was met on November15-17, 2012 in Torrance, California. The Rev. Jill Hudson, Coordinator for Mid-Council Relations in OGA/PMW was invited for the special session to be informed and to discuss on issues on Mid-Councils. It was a good opportunity to share the direction of Korean American Presbyteries in their ecclesiastical and missional works. Constitutional Musing document by the OGA and ACC were presented and affirmed. The 220th GA approved transfer of 6 Korean congregations from the Synod of South Atlantic to Atlantic Korean American Presbyteries in the Synod of Mid-Atlantic.

The total memberships of the four Korean American Presbyteries are15,197 with 126 congregations as of November 30,2012.
