Andrew Thomas
Greetings! I am Andy Thomas, a 23 year old Political Science graduate who is super excited about his upcoming year as a YAV in DC! I was born in upstate New York and grew up in Tucson, AZ with a very supportive and close family. Growing up I attended Holy Way Presbyterian Church and even went on to lead the youth group, teach at Vacation Bible School and served on the church's session for a term. In high school I volunteered with homeless shelters and the local food bank, this is when I discovered that I had a passion for helping and working with those less fortunate. After high school I went to Northern Arizona University and graduated with Political Science and a minor in History. Following graduation I moved out to Portland, OR hoping to pursue my dreams in working with a homeless support network. I loved the city and the people but I could only get jobs working in restaurants and I wasn't feeling rewarded in that line of work. I craved the feeling that I would be doing something useful in my life and I hope to live this passion during my year as a YAV.
I'm looking forward to this opportunity for a variety of reasons, from being able to continue pursuing my passion in mission work, to exploring another corner of our country for a year, even to explore God's role in my life and hopefully work to understand our connection a little bit more.
