Greetings! I am Andy Thomas, a 23 year old Political Science graduate who is super excited about his upcoming year as a YAV in DC!  I was born in upstate New York and grew up in Tucson, AZ with a very supportive and close family.  Growing up I attended Holy Way Presbyterian Church and even went on to lead the youth group, teach at Vacation Bible School and served on the church's session for a term.  In high school I volunteered with homeless shelters and the local food bank, this is when I discovered that I had a passion for helping and working with those less fortunate.  After high school I went to Northern Arizona University and graduated with Political Science and a minor in History.  Following graduation I moved out to Portland, OR hoping to pursue my dreams in working with a homeless support network.  I loved the city and the people but I could only get jobs working in restaurants and I wasn't feeling rewarded in that line of work.  I craved the feeling that I would be doing something useful in my life and I hope to live this passion during my year as a YAV.

I'm looking forward to this opportunity for a variety of reasons, from being able to continue pursuing my passion in mission work, to exploring another corner of our country for a year, even to explore God's role in my life and hopefully work to understand our connection a little bit more.  Thank you so much to everyone who helps me in this process and be sure to check my blog frequently to stay up to date with my new adventure!
